As for clothing, I have a thing for Victorian Era clothing and the psychedelic style.
Permalink Reply by Andrew on While I don't necessarily classify my fashion in any type of era, I guess I would have to call it 30’s-50’s chic.
I get to wear suits every day, so that is what it starts with. Allen Edmonds shoes for the most part, all classic shoes or wingtips with some more flair. Bow ties most days with French cuff shirts or pocket squares thrown in on occasion.
I don’t try to pile on everything every day though. Many of my suits have vests and I also have my pants tailored for suspenders. I will only do suspenders or the vest about once out of every four wears though. I only do pocket squares about every other wear, 90% of the time matching my tie, but I sometimes match cufflinks/silks or suspenders if they are a complementary color to tie/shirt. While I have a variety of things I can do, I just don’t like to do everything at once. It starts to look comical when you come to work every day wearing a vest, suspenders, cufflinks, a pocket square and a bowtie.
The reason I would put the 30’s in there are my shoes. My AE wingtips – one brown and black spectator shoe particularly – are all shoes they have been making since the 30’s or reintroduced from the 30’s. Their basic dress shoes are also some of the standard in the game.
One place I think I break with convention is my two basic toe caps. I have dark brown Park Avenues when everyone will tell you to get black. I have black strands when everyone buys them in brown. I think this is because everyone tries to wear their black basic toe caps for “formal” wear. Black toe caps are not a tuxedo shoe, and I would recommend everyone buy at least one pair of less costly tuxedo shoes if you are going to wear them more than twice a year. Then you can have two pairs of more versatile shoes for the every day. I only throw in the wingtips maybe once a week. They are also good for casual weekends/jeans.
My suits are probably a little more 50’s, so again, I don’t think I could put my style into a certain era. I do still knock out my Grandfathers style/how to be a gentleman books to get classic info. It just comes down to moderation and not ending up in an expected everyday uniform for me I guess. I like to mix it up.

For the office, where we dress "business casual", I prefer pleated and non-pleated khakis with button-down shirts and crew neck sweaters in winter. Sometimes, I'll swap a waist coat for the sweater. For summer wear, I'll wear southwest style short sleeve collared shirts, and lightweight pants in summer colors (light tan, or white). I'll add a Stetson straw cowboy or panama style hat. If it's especially hot, I'll pass on boots for Sperry Topsiders. Cargo shorts on occasion, and forego socks with the Topsiders. Sometimes, I'll wear a specialty ball cap.
Outer wear depends on where I'm going... I can wear a lined denim jacket, with jeans and boots. Or, I'll wear a top coat with perhaps, a waist coat and dressy boots. If the temperature is in the 50s, I'll wear my A2 or G1 leather jacket with an outback style hat.
I tend to wear different styles depending on various factors. What I avoid is mismatching styles, preferring a "put together" look that shows some thought went into dressing. I can look like I just pulled up in my Wrangler from the high desert, or contrast that with climbing into the Infinity going for dinner and cocktails. Whatever style you prefer, take the time to make sure you look well pulled together.
Like I tell the young Engineers I mentor, attention to the details will often make for success or failure. Consider that, no matter what style you prefer.

Comb-over hair, taper in the back, pomade to keep it all in place; little or no facial hair (I go in between a goatee and clean shaven), and relatively short sideburns . Horned rim glasses, collard shirts, slacks and chinos, and plaid shirts. Occasionally denim but not as much. Cologne, watches, cardigans, knit ties (occasionally), and silk ties when appropriate. Classic is best.
