Hobby.

Both.  Wasting time is underrated.

JB

Agreed. Both, but bett

I say hobby

It can be both.  I usually play video games as a hobby, but they become a waste of time if you spend too much time on it.  If you are neglecting other responsibilities because you are playing video games, then it's become an unnecessary distraction, and maybe an addiction.

waste of time. Something to do on a rainy cold afternoon off of work if there is nothing to read, drink or have sex with in the house.

What he said!  And I still can think of a hundred other things to do besides gaming but thats just me.

I think it's no more of a waste of time than watching TV.  A little in moderation is good if it's something you enjoy doing.  We can't be going and doing all the time.  Too much of it becomes a waste though.

I have always argued the point, when playing games even offline they all involve strategy of some sorts. so its almost like a brain workout.

Watching TV is not useful unless its for the News or Documentaries. in saying that though de-stressing, relaxing is always good for the health.

like all things moderation is the key.

I would say manly.

I currently work full time (very good pay), look after a girlfriend, am a committed Scout leader, studying part time at Uni, work around the house and i love to relax on the PS3\PC.

I think as one grows older, he finds that he no longer plays video games for the sake of entertainment, but rather for the stories they tell and the universes they drag the player into. At least that's the primary reason why I still pick up a controller or joystick from time to time. That is not to say that games that rely heavily on action and easy-to-pick-up-difficult-to-put-down gameplay are no good. A game of Call of Duty or Grand Theft Auto is still enjoyable, but with little time on my hands and being a man skilled in the ways of procrastination, I find that I only pick up games that either have nostalgic value or tell a story the way only a video game can do it.

So is it a waste of time or a hobby? That's merely two connotations of the same process - and who cares anyway? Indeed, wasting time is underrated and one man's hobby may be anothers idea of wasting life.

Waste of time but only because I'm not interested in them. I'm sure I fritter away hours in ways others view pointless.

And just for my own clarity of thinking, where does reading and writing on AoM fall.

It's both. I don't see vilifying it anymore than any other waste of time hobby (such as about 99% of what we all do on the internet) but I refuse to buy into the arguments about how its good for you. Throwing a ball at a wall and trying to catch it will be a lot more beneficial to your reflexes and hand-eye coordination and you'll create more of a memorable experience in your life by walking into a new place than that you get from a game.

So yeah, waste of time, waste of your life. But so is many hobbies so who cares.
