I have recently acquired a three-piece safety DE razor with brush from Mühle (Mühle Rytmo Black Fibre), and so far I am loving the experience. I have been wet-shaving every since I started shaving, but using cartridge razors from Gillette and recently Wilkinson Sword, which annoyed my skin and was a tedious experience.

After some training, I am close to getting a pretty clean shave, but I feel I am using the safety razor wrong. Instead of locking the razor head completely, I loosen it up a bit, in order to expose more of the blade. This gives me a closer shave, but it feels 'wrong', as if it is not meant to be used like that (the parts feel too loose, and I have to adjust it all the time so it doesn't loosen entirely). If I lock the razor head, the shaves are nowhere near close.

Any thought or tips regarding this?

I would expect the guys who are REALLY into shaving to start recommending you "graduate" to a straight razor.

The "safety" part of  "safety razor" comes from having the blade holder guard against accidentally slashing yourself.  That's why it's designed to hold the blade firmly, and slightly off the skin.

Check out phatboygeo from Shave Nation on youtube for DE shaving. . . he says to go once with the grain, once front to back, and once back to front (maybe there is another/fourth trip). Takes awhile but that is a close shave with a DE. If the blade is loose at all in the handle you will eventually cut yourself, maybe even bad. Also you have to experiment with the angle that you hold the blade to your skin. I do one trip with the grain on my neck and it is the closest and most comfortable shave I've had other than at the Barber Shop with a straight razor.

Hello. I've been shaving with a safety razor for over a year now. I started with a Murker 34C. It was a good shaver, but needed to be a little more aggressive. To help this, I took a used razor blade and trimmed the sharp edges off, and placed it under the sharp blade on the razor. This lifted the blade and exposed more of the blade for a more aggressive shave.
Recently, I upgraded to the Ikon 5 piece system and can go from really mild to really aggressive.
Hope this helps.

What did you use to trim the razor? It seems like a solution that will work well for me as well, as I think the main problem is it not being aggressive enough.

I just used the scissors that came with my kitchen knives. The blade is pretty thin, so they cut right through it. I had to sharpen them afterwards though, but no big deal.

I'd recommend investing in a straight razor, while there's more risk of cutting yourself, the smoothness is unmatched. If its too pricey or you don't like the hassle of stropping, then invest in a razor blade holder which more often than not, looks like a straight razor, except the entire design is made to hold said razor in place.

Called this first!

I am planning on getting into straight razors eventually, but at first I want to master the art of making good lather and becoming more focused during the shave. I also don't want to discard the safety razor that I just bought, but rather make use of it :)

Introductions are in order!

Greetings!I am Chris and I am 25. I live in Greece and I suppose I am here because I would like to have some meaningful conversations, the kind I, for some reason, get in real life, in day-to-day life.I am studying to become a programmer, I am almost done and starting to think about my actual future in the workforce, while at the same time a lot of my opinions have changed lately. I feel like I'm going through a second puberty... A good thing I suppose, I am becoming a better me! And I would…See More
