Considering that you're not located in either of the two US major media centers, you're going to have a tough row to hoe.

I minored in Communications (back in the day), and as a professional discipline, it didn't make a whit of difference to my immediate post -collegiate job search.

Google search communications jobs in your area, look at Craigslist jobs, look at newspaper job postings, go to the local news channel station(actually get in your car and drive to them, do not call) and ask a manager if they are hiring. You're just going to have to get out and put yourself out there. I don't know what all jobs you could get with that degree, but I would hope after several years in college they told you what you can do.

They have told me what i can do. The problem is that a number of the jobs that this degree would apply towards require experience that i simply do not have yet

Apply anyway.  I scored a pretty sweet gig well outside the listed requirements simply because I was the only one in the country who threw my name in.

I knew someone else with the same degree.  He worked for minimum wage for years.  There was always someone willing to do more for less just to get into the industry.  Now he runs a fruit stand.  I don't mean to be discouraging but it is a very cut-throat business.

If you can get the security clearance, NSA and CIA seem to like your degree.  http://www.nsa.gov/careers/index.shtml  It looks good on a resume but the top secret clearance might lead you down different job paths.
