It is normally against the Cowboy Code as well as other codes of chivalry and gentlemanly conduct, but it does happen.

I suspect that most of us agree that to give your wife, girlfriend or both a beating deserves a public flogging. That should be a given. What about exceptions? We are not likely to be fighting for our lives against Xenia Onatopp and her lovely killer thighs, or highly-trained professionals of any sort. Where are the limits?

Summary of an incident follows. Over at Stormbringer's Thunder, an incident from a year or two back is described with his daughter-in-law [Edit: I messed up, glad it was pointed out: She was the step-daughter living under the same roof], someone he calls the Bulletproof B**ch (see, self-censoring again!). She had been verbally abusing, and had physical confrontations, with a guy for several years. The last time it happened, he had resolved not to let her beat him (closed fist, not a slap) in the face — again. Key word, again. He hit back, knocked her down (she's a lotta Rosie, she weighs three hundred pounds and outweighs him). Also, she is not a frail child, she is 25. When the police were called, they told him to evict her.

I asked a construction worker friend of mine. He does not condone striking a woman, but he draws the line at being punched in the face and would also strike back. Interestingly, some women I spoke with sided with the man, not the woman.

What do you think? Absolutely never (aside from James Bond or John McClain situations), or, "In your case, I'll make an exception"?

To every rule there is an exception, in my mind this is legit. The key words... fist not slap to the face, and >again<. Sounds to me like she was a bully who counted on the rule to do as she pleased, she could hit as much as she wanted & no one would ever dare to hit back. I am not keen on hitting in general, but I'll side with the guy on this one.

Oh yeah, self defence completely applies there.

One side issue is the closed fist / open hand distinction. That line of thinking applied to women seems to lead to some edge cases where you can slap a bitch but you can't beat her because that would be horribly wrong. It sounds to me like the key thing that lets you defend yourself in that situation is the shape of her hand and that's just incredibly narrow and formalistic for responding to an attack.

This one looks like some form of the self-defense exception kicks in. General rule - no hitting.
I won't be touched by anyone. I don't do it to others and its unacceptable to treat me in a way contrary to my standards. I believe that you would agree with John Wayne in The Shootist: "I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, and I won't be laid a hand on. I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them."
I agree whole heartedly with conchokid. I was taught this and I teach my son this. Even though in my case my father was a hypocrite. The sad part is many of todays youth no longer feel this way.
Exactly what my old PD commander said," As long as she acts like a lady, treat her as a lady. If she acts like a man, all bets are off. Treat her like a man."
I concur.

Really?!?!  If she acts like a man, get the hell out of there!  Go find a women. There's absolutely no reasonable excuse for violence against women.  Remove your self from the situation before it escalates to that point.  It's a sorrowful excuse for a man who would maintain such a toxic relationship.

And what about when she acts normal, sometimes bitchy, but otherwise acts female, all the way up until the moment she attempts to kill you? Would that be a reasonable excuse for violence against women?

If she's trying to kill you, what noble sentiments are worth dying for?

Not that one... I landed the spine of a textbook upside her head so I could get out the door....

You would've had to ignored red flags in the past that hinted towards violent tendencies.  If some crazed bitch pointed a gun at me, and death was eminent, my first reaction wouldn't be to punch her in the face.  I'd have a better chance by grabbing the weapon and securing it...Then I'd leave.
