Now I know this site is heavily US-centric but is there anyone out there looking forward to the upcoming European Championships?

As a British ex-pat I shall be glued to the tv for 2 weeks- even though we are crap and dont stand a chance.

Even better that every game is live on ESPN!  Things have certainly changed in the 10 or so years I'e lived here.

Anyway- didnt see any topics on this so I thought I'd start one

En-Ger-Lannnnnndddd!!!! ROAR!!!!

I don't even know what sport you are talking about?

I would assume soccer...Europeans are big on soccer.

If that's the case then as a current British patriot, I am completely disinterested in football. The hatred between fans reflects the hatred they ought to feel for the players. I would like to shrink football to a tiny fraction of it's current size by planting trees in most of the pitch, reducing teams to three-a-side and removing the limbs of its supporters.

On the other hand, it's good that the English etc. can lean on this cultural bastion from other countries. Long-live television!

So I am confused why you bothered to reply to a post concerning it?  If you knew what it was you would have known from the title of the thread and my comments therein.

I thought that it might have been something of interest to me but not of enough interest that I would know straight away by what you had written, given your excitement I thought you may have emitted details you meant to include.

To be honest, I clicked on the link to the discussion because I thought it would be about the currency, and was already assuming there would be something I would enjoy about it when I read your comments and didn't understand them.

Fair point Rory,

No offence was intended- For some reason on this site I see a lot of people commenting on things that they have interest in or knowledge of.

It just makes me wonder why they go out of their way to comment on things like this?

In American newspapers I'm guessing European sport stories are squeezed in the back of the sports section somewhere between little league baseball and peewee hockey.

This is true, they are far too busy partaking in sports where only they compete and then crown themselves 'World Champions'

Wait a minute...you mean to dare say that we aren't the world champions of Baseball and Football? (The real football, with pads and overgrown basket weavers, not the other version played by skinny men running all over the place.)

No of course you are World Champions of everything you guys play by yourselves- all alone...

Doesnt it ever get boring?  There's no benchmark, nothing to aim for - to compete with

It's like the sporting equilivent of dating your cousins-  Its probably fun at the beginning, but eventually you must wonder if it's doing some major psychological damage!! :)

As an American the only sports I watch are the Olympics, though its commercialization today sucks.
I totally agree on the World Champion title, kinda silly for a sport like football.
But why you guys so love soccer is beyond me; it IS a bunch of skinny guys running 'round a field.

I've mentioned this elsewhere here before but what I sometimes hate about professional soccer (I like the sport. Played as a kid) is when players take a dive (a more popular technique with Southern Europeans).

Imagine a hockey player falling, then crying like he broke a femur. The other guy getting a penalty and then the "hurt" guy skating on like nothing happened. He'd be booed off the ice by his own fans.

Advice on whether to stop talking to a girl

I have liked the girl for a long time. Years. I'm 18 now, and for most of the time I know her, I mainly just talked to her. She doesn't live nearby. Tonight, I finally told her of my feelings for her over the phone. I shouldn't have waited this long but I did. She didn't return them. As politely as she could she told me that she wasn't especially attracted to me, and that my obvious attraction to her had made talking to me and being friends with me a little awkward at times. It was a relief to…See More
