Gents,
Instead of the usual routine of buying sunglasses from a rack at the qwik-e-mart I decided to spoil myself a little and just ordered a nice sport style pair from Oakley.com I have never been a regular sunglass wearer and I do understand they make a great addition to your look, that one little extra thing that gets the ladies attention. So my question is what are the rules? Do you ever wear them indoors? Should I have different styles for different situations. Are you a d bag for wearing them at night?
Remember the volleyball scene in topgun? Was that really badass or kinda.....yeah.

I'd also say check out Costa Del Mar.  They are the only sunglasses I will wear from now until the day I get put in the ground. They have a couple of different options for polarization on the lenses as well as colors for different light applications. They also have about a bazillion different styles as well. I own a few pairs of Caballitos, Fathoms, Harpoons, and Rincons.  Another good brand is Maui Jim. I would say maybe the only time you can wear them at night is maybe if you ride a motorcycle, but other than that, to me at least, makes me think you belong on the show Jersey Shore.  Just my .02
Are you worried about UV damage to your retinas at night?
I would never consider wearing them at night unless I was at a corey hart concert. Then again, I wouldnt be at a corey hart concert.
I can make them work at night.  But, I'm me.  I know few others who can.
In my opinion if you are wearing Oakleys you are paying to wear a brand not actually paying for quality sun glasses. Unless you have actually owned the exact brand and style of sunglasses before I wouldn't order them off the net; they are not exactly one size fits all. The best sun glasses I ever had were Vaurnet. Vaurnet cost $100+ but you are paying for quality not brand name.

Not indoors unless it is somewhere with an abundance of natural lighting. Yes, you are a dbag for wearing them at night. That scene in topgun was really gay, but aviators are a classic and as long as you have the face for them, they look pretty good.

edit: Paul, Oakley does have excellent quality sunglasses. I have been wearing them for years (they have military grade ones) and they haven't failed me. I do agree though on the ordering online part. It is really hit or miss, it is best to find a retailer and try them on.

Both indoors and at night... You're a douche bag either way. Wear them when you NEED them, not as a fashion statement. Take them off when you're having a conversation with people, especially ones in authority positions or those in whom you don't really know or are just meeting. And the Top Gun thing... pretty gay. Love the movie, but oiled up dudes is not my cup of tea.

I've got RayBans and love them. Good quality and classic style.

Only times I wear them at night are to fun parties with friends. Women love them and always ask to try them on. It's funny until the fifth person asks, and then you start to worry about someone walking off with your $100 sunglasses (that's when they get put away).

As for different styles, sure you can go that route. But sunglasses are more of an icon for yourself. Everyone knows you always wear that sweet pair of (Oakleys, Maui Jims, Ray Bans etc). That is, unless, the style is too focused (such as sports sunglasses or fashion statement sunglasses).

The Top Gun scene? That was, like, one of the best scenes. And that song, Playin with the Boys, so hot. And Val Kilmer is so dreamy in that movie.

Costa Del Mar for me. A little pricey but I spend quite a bit of time on the water and need the protection. Love the fit, durability, and light weight. I never wear sunglasses indoors or at night. Very "d baggish" IMO.

I wear Native.  Specifically the Ignition.  It's important when buying sunglasses that they fit your face.  I have a small head and narrow face, and the Ignition is a perfect fit for me.  That's one thing that I love about the good sunglasses is that they will list the frame size most of the time, and you can know if you will get a decent fit out of them.  Had my Ignitions for going on 4 years now and they are still in perfect condition...Well I have noticed that one of the ear pieces seems to have more play now, but hey, it's been 4 years.

I will find myself sometimes wearing them inside, but usually just because I'm running in to grab a bottle of water or something.  Anytime I'm inside for extended periods of time they are off.  Never wear them at night.

Never inside, never at night. I think you should have a casual/dress pair (when wearing a suit or going for a stroll) and a sport pair (when cycling, running, or doing whatever else). Pick glasses that you feel comfortable wearing and that aren't a bright color.

Volleyball scene is quite awesome

Frank Beard, Dusty Hill and the Reverend have it right.  Go out and get yourself some cheap black frames.
