I live in an apartment with two roommates.
The smell of when walking in is always atrocious. I'm pretty sure I'm not the cause since all my dirty laundry is in a laundry bag whereas compared to my suitemates, one has a lot of bags about and the other his dirty laundry freely roaming his room.
Besides telling them to take care of their business,
what can I use to keep the room smelling nice?
I'm looking for a manly smell, like wood, tobacco, coffee or cinnamon.
I need something that stays, that's not temporary like the fabreeze sprays.
or what do you guys use to keep your apartment not smelling funky?
thanks

clean it more often (vacuum, wipe down surfaces with soap, etc) and open a window when you can.

Just kidding.
If the apartment is going to be messy, then you'll need air fresheners. There are lots of products designed to eliminate odours and replace them with something else, and a few even have "manly" scents to them. Look for candles or the plug-in type.
Keeping the apartment clean is a good idea, but that will just keep it smelling clean... it won't make the apartment smell like wood or tobacco.

Clean.
If your mates won't listen to you and pitch in, then carry on and clean. They will come to their senses sooner or later. Guilt eventually eats people alive, no matter how big or small, or tough or soft. Believe me. I went through the same thing in College. It took a year but I got my way.
As for making the place smell manlier, some of those candles from Huckleberry.com work like a charm for occasional usage (make sure you get the ones for men). What I do is leave the bathroom door open when I shave. The aromas of the cream, cleanliness and musk waft out and give an accent to the place, instead of overpowering with candles. Albeit, it doesn't fill the whole place but it works. Not too much, not too little.
That's my 2 cents (or 5 cents since the penny no longer "exists" in Canada. Ha!).

Adding artificial scents puts chemicals in the air that mix with stale air and form formaldehyde a cancer causing chemical.

I would say you are young and this is temporary so enjoy the ride. Brew some coffee, get some plants in the house, open windows and keep the kitchen clean.
Permalink Reply by Mark R on March 3, 2013 at 7:40pm You need to clean. Straight and simple. Also, unless you're a gym rat, dirty laundry doesn't stink that bad. The main culprits are in the kitchen and the bathroom. IMHO, prepackages scents are like icing on a cake. If the cake is bad, the icing ain't gonna help.
Empty out the kitchen trash every day or two and clean around the area where the kitchen trashcan is. If you cooked meat, fish, or fowl, then emty the trash that day. Three days old "fish juice" in the garbage can gag a maggot. Also occasionally Lysol the can.
Same goes for dishes in the sink. Don't let the sit. The only difference between sink and stink is "T", as in time.
Ajax the kitchen and bathroom sink and stove top once a week and pour backing soda down the garbage disposal occasionally.
Toilet bowl cleaner and wipe up the area where you missed the bowl. Clean the outside of it as well.
Open a window. Use a window fan to speed up airing out the place.
