Sport jacket and Jeans?
Hello Gentleman,
For years I have always wondered the appropriateness of wearing a sport coat with jeans. I personally think it is a little tacky but I am not always the best judge of style. I am referring to something like a nice tweed and a nice pair of jeans to compliment. Your thoughts?

How "proper" do you want to be?
Traditional style says that jeans are exclusively a form of workwear, and that they would be inappropriate to wear in that way. A sports coat should always be worn with slacks, usually in a rougher fabric like a twill, or even a corduroy.
Modern style says that jeans are just one style of casual pant, and are just as valid a choice as anything else.
My own take on it is that jeans tend to be less dressy than even the most casual of slacks, and that while they can be worn with a sport coat, that coat should be on the more casual end of the spectrum in both cut and fabric texture.
I have a black leather blazer that looks great with a pair of jeans.

Tweed or Corduroy jackets work fine with jeans (nice jeans, not baggy/holey ones). My general rule with jeans is that the texture of the cloth of the jacket should not be finer than the jeans.*
*there are summer weight exceptions however.

The predominat rule for a "Sports coat" is that the pants should not match (even 'almost' match). That said, there are dressy jeans that can be coordinated with a proper sports coat. In addition, there are nice colored twill jeans that work better than basic blue denim.
I do agree with David Knight that if you do so, the coat should be on the more casual end such as a corduroy or a twill. Keep in mind that it is 'casual'.

Here in Texas, jeans can pass for formal wear... Jeans are so mainstream nowadays that I see no difference between jeans and khakis. I often wear a black (or gray) sports coat, white oxford, (nice) jeans, and black leather boots, and I can get away with it at work and many other places, too. Maybe it's geography-dependent, but I give it a thumbs-up.

Thank you guys! I found a really nice olive cord jacket this weekend at a resale shop. Though it is not American made the price is right and it fits me great! I need to get it cleaned. I cannot wait to wear it out!

Don't do this. During the whole queer eye for the straight guy explosion a lot of men have started experimenting with the idea of dressing clothing items down. I bet most of us can recall the whole graphic tee shirt blazer situation. I think this is in the same vein. If you're going to an event where a blazer and jeans would be considered acceptable, why not simply wear casual trousers and a sweater. Basically I think this is something that was acceptable 4 years ago.

Apparently the views on the jeans/jacket combo are very mixed. I must remind you that we live in different countries, and culture might be completely different.
In Holland the jean/jacket combo (with a good dress shirt) is seen as a very good combo. Make sure the jeans are dark, straight cut and well fitted. Pair them with good (dress) shoes.
Now, this is not something most people would wear to work (although it's more than acceptable in a LOT of companies), but it's become so standard that you could almost call it a uniform for guys aged 23-30 out for a drink. (By that I mean guys who don't feel the need to 'stick it to the man' by doing the whole 'I'm a creative and nonchalant rebel'-thing).
Most people will lose the jacket inside though.

Disagree that the jeans must necessarily be dark, since you are matching them with a sport coat some contrast in color looks neat. For example, the traditional deep dark navy blue blazer works best paired against a washed out light-blue, or at least some medium wash hue, pair of jeans. Whereas, a navy blue jacket with new raw denim unwashed indigo blue jeans is way too close in color and looks like a suit you trying to wear a suit, but misplaced the trousers for it so substituted some jeans instead.
In general wool tweed jackets and other fabric blends woven into a textured cloth are the safest choice for sport coat to pairs with blue (or even black) jeans. With a coat and tie dress code for work I've acquired gobs of sport coats and so wear one all the time with jeans. I have them so wear them as other guys would throw on a nylon windbreaker. I only have a couple of fancy Italian made ones that I never pair up with jeans, but otherwise nearly all sport coats fair game for that purpose.

I see it as a way to dress up a casual look a hair rather than to loosen up a formal look.
The combo has been around for a long, time, especially de-rigueur in an academic environment.
