Permalink Reply by AdamR on February 18, 2013 at 3:47pm Obviously it doesn't sound like you will be doing this for the rest of your life since it probably isn't your passion, but I think the kind of woman worth marrying will be happy that you are willing to do things you don't like to support your family.
And in the mean time I am sure there are better ways to explain your job without saying you work in a slaughter house. Just mention, I am the guy who makes that steak you are eating more possible. Just joking but really.
Permalink Reply by Rebekah on February 18, 2013 at 4:26pm I agree with the consensus. Also, do your best to get over the embarrassment. Easier typed than done, I know. But yours sounds like honest work. No reason to be embarrassed.
Permalink Reply by Rich T on February 18, 2013 at 5:44pm A vegetarian working in a slaughterhouse... Out of respect, i will avoid making a joke on the subject, although i'm sure you've heard them all and wouldnt mind. There is no reason to be bashful about your employment, and a previous comment about "working with animals and feeding hungry children" is right on the mark. Perhaps it may help to emphasize that it is merely a stepping stone to a better job; something to pay the bills while you persue your life's passion. And in terms of work-dating stories, i've got one for you. Being a paramedic, i can tend to be a bit obsessed with an individual's veins. Just a quirk, i guess. But on my first date with the girl who i am now engaged to marry, my "quirk" unfortunately teamed up with my missing "brain-to-mouth filter". Of all the things i could compliment her on- her beautiful eyes, winning smile, tinkling laugh, or even her amazing breasts, what's the first thing out of my mouth? "Hey, nice veins!" Open mouth, insert foot. Thank god she's a nurse.
Permalink Reply by Joey on March 3, 2013 at 4:05pm That is a little funny that you are a butcher and do not eat meat. It is not funny though that you have one of the oldest professions there are ( aside from hooking). Be proud man, you are The Butcher. There are some bad butchers out there, consider Bill the Butcher from Gangs of New York. By the by, whats a good cut of veal going for.
Permalink Reply by Betz on March 6, 2013 at 1:15pm I live in a very liberal community (San Francisco) and I am an attorney for police officers. That often becomes awkward since most people in the Bay Area are very anti-police and you often get accused of being a fascist or racist when you defend the 5-O.
Permalink Reply by Glendale Eugene on March 6, 2013 at 1:38pm Accused?
Excuse me but what is so wrong with being accused? Unless being fascist or racist for defending the 5-O is wrong, un-American or illegal these days?
Perhaps we all need to stop fretting over being accused of being wrong instead of accused and guilty of wrong doing.
Permalink Reply by Jack Bauer on March 6, 2013 at 1:55pm What's wrong with being falsely accused? Self-answering question.
He said it was awkward, not debilitating. People are obnoxious. Obnoxious people cause awkwardness. Not-so-obnoxious people have to deal with, or ignore, the awkwardness caused by obnoxious people. I don't see the problem.

Permalink Reply by Glendale Eugene on March 6, 2013 at 3:02pm You're right Mr. Bauer, He didn't. Nor did he say Falsely. He of course had no reason to plead guilt or innocence. None of us should feel compelled to plead fogivness or understanding for being who and what we are. Obnoxious people be damned. And let them be damned with/by their own awkwardness without dragging any on a just and decent footing below board with them which is probably often their intention.
Permalink Reply by Betz on March 6, 2013 at 3:38pm The only thing that is wrong with it is it is awkward and tiresome having to engage those conversations defending my profession in social settings frequently. I'm not really sure what your concern is beyond that.
Permalink Reply by Will on March 6, 2013 at 1:53pm I don't see a problem. If you think the image of an abattoir might put someone off her lunch, maybe.
I think joking about it's fine, as long as it's not gross. "I work at an abattoir. I'm a vegetarian. Now is that selfless, or what?"
But since several had a different take, maybe there is some taboo I'm not aware of.
