Hello, I recently have gotten into the traditional shaving culture and started using one of my Grandpa's old safety razors. I would like some advice on how to pick a good soap/cream and if there are any stores I could go to and smell some of the soaps. I've done a little research and have heard of a few good "beginner" soaps; however, most of these have poor reviews as to the slickness and post shave feeling. Ideally, I would use a cream that doesn't require me to use lotion afterwards, unscented witch hazel at most.
Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood is a great creme, Though it's nice to have after shaves, any decent soap/croap/creme that you would probably buy are good enough that an aftershave really is uneccessary.
Proraso Green is also a winner, that is more of a croap.
How does the Proraso green smell? Their description made it sound like it smells like menthol and eucalyptus? And Taylor seems good, especially because it's affordable and they have such a variety in products, but I've heard a lot of complaining about how they require additional moisturizers post shave, especially for those who do 3 pass shaves.
My favorite shaving soap is Taylor of Old Bond Street. Their grapefruit scent (yes, grapefruit!) is one of my favorites.
