Good morning Gentlemen and Ladies,
I have been working from home for a few years and I just received a promtion that will require me to go back into the office full time.
I'm looking for ideas concerning what you guys carry with and store at your desks at work?
I have the usual items, cellphone, pad, pen etc- I tend to get narrow focused when I think about things like this.
So I guess I'm just looking to get a different perspective from my own.
I'm open to all suggestions, helpful, inspirational, whimsical etc
What do you guys keep at your desks to help you with your jobs and get you through the day?

That is a good reason for cell phones, I have never worked in a group where so many people commuted to work. However we are not restricted from long distant calls either but good point.
Permalink Reply by Christopher M. Bartone on January 3, 2013 at 8:25am Another reason is that in some places (such as where my wife works), you might not be able to call a cell phone from the office phones for some reason. The system won't let you dial one.
Another valid point, however since i am not in either of these situations I still have no need to have it at my desk. Guess as usual the situation dictates, however I bekueve that above 95% of people have cell phones at their desks out of preference, and as earlier mentioned it is only a preference of mine not to have it at my desk.
Permalink Reply by The Earl of Essex on January 4, 2013 at 4:07pm I think I need to clarify something that I didnt make clear in my post. Its not like this is my 1st job in an office. I've worked for the company for over 5 years and for the last 2 years I've worked from home exclusively.
I just earned a promotion that requires me to go back into the office full time. My direct supervisor is a Director now so this isnt a $5 per hour gig here.
I was just looking to see if you guys keep anything unusual at your desks or anything that you think would help others through their day etc.
Hope this helps steer the conversation
Thanks for all your replies though
Permalink Reply by Carl Monster on January 4, 2013 at 4:15pm I would be careful on bringing in anything you (or anyone) would consider "unusual" till you are there for awhile.
I would stick to the basics.
Leave the taxidermy at home for now.

I blame political correctness
Permalink Reply by Native Son on January 15, 2013 at 9:10am I do have a couple of unusual group photos of a state Highway Patrol gig from around 1930. The guys, including a great-uncle, were flown by the Army to the airfield...so they're in full uniform and wearing parachutes.

I do have a collection of photographs my grandfather gave me that he bought from a French photographer when his shipped docked somewhere during WW2 that shows Austrailian soldiers being 'arrested' by German troops.
Nothing that I would put at my desk but still a piece of history I have stored away. Due to the fact that they lost, you dont see many examples of photos showing them actually while they had the uuper hand etc
Permalink Reply by Slacker on January 16, 2013 at 5:57pm I'm a minimalist and like my desk clean each day when I come in.
Office supplies: Pen holder, envelopes, stamps, notepad, a good pen, a pencil, highlighter or 2, phone charger. Padfolio for meetings.
Personal items: Shoe shine kit, Aspirin, Band Aids, Photos, a can of soup, plastic bowl and a spoon in case you have to lunch at the desk unexpectedly. Extra $20 (a 10, a 5 and some 1's). Change holder. Water bottle. Napkins. Lysol spray.
Optional: Wireless keyboard/mouse. I put mine in a desk drawer when not in use for 3 reasons. 1. Gives me extra desk space. 2. Keeps people from camping at my desk while I'm gone. 3. Neat, clean appearance.
