Moving to Texas
Men, i am considering a move from NC to Texas. I have questions as google is really not a lot of help.
I do not know what area of Texas to look into but maybe you could tell me.
Where: Within three hours of Arlington Texas
What: Hills not a city town like Dallas Texas colleges close by so I can finish my undergrad
Good place to raise kids and have employment
Price: Easy for a newly married couple to sustain living
and have options to be a home
I looked at Austin, too pricy
Arlington is too much hustle and bustle but it does offer colleges and extended family is there (Which is why I want to be in driving distance)
Please help this Carolina man look into becoming a Texan. Thank you.

No, I am researching if I were to move to Texas, where I would move. From that point I would look at jobs this is at least 1 to two years out maybe four.

Jack has a good list of cities, I would also add Abilene.
It would really help to know what industry you would be looking at as that will make a difference.
Another thing is that the D/FW area is masssive and always adding more. From what I here from friends and family in the metroplex is that it is stretching up as far north as Sherman. Tons of smaller towns in there.

So, you're basically looking for a smallish central Texas town between Dallas and Houston? Personally, I've never thought of Arlington as all that fast-paced -- but I've been in Houston forever.
If you liked Austin, try Round Rock or Georgetown ... good Austin suburbs, as far as I know. Southwestern University is in Georgetown. UT in Austin. Nothing in Round Rock but suburbs ... but its within commute distance of a lot. If you're looking for a smaller town -- maybe Waco or Bryan/College Station? Baylor University is in Waco. Aggies are in Bryan/College Station.
There's always Temple or Killeen, I guess. Not much going on there, though. Opposite of fast-paced. My parents grew up in that area. Grandmother still lives there. Brother teaches in Temple ... but I don't think he's looking to stay long term.
Houston is only four hours from the Dallas area. That's driving distance. The Woodlands, a good suburb, are on the North side of Houston ... closer to Dallas. Maybe Conroe or Huntsville? Houston and the suburbs aren't going to be much slower than Arlington, though.

I'll second this, I don't think Arlington has the hustle and bustle of Dallas or Fort Worth proper.

I'm from Pflugerville, which is just south of Round Rock. The 'burbs north of Austin are nice and pretty inexpensive. If you want hill country near Austin, you could also check out Dripping Springs, Liberty Hill or even Fredricksburg.

Waco could be good, Stephenville, Sherman, Commerce, Might try Denton home of University of North Texas, and Texas Women;s University close enough to the action but great College town, Celina, Argyle,Keller, Sorry, but Abeliene feels dead, and it is a long drive, Waxahachie is a great little town South of Dallas on I- 35, and it and Midlothian have easy access to Arlington. Hope this helps.

Within 3 hours of Arlington you can add in the piney woods of East Texas. Beautiful smaller towns and Nacogdoches has a good size college. Not sure about employment in that area.

I personally love living in DFW. So much to do. BUT if that's not your thing, there is Denton on the north edge of DFW, still apparently has a small town feel. It's also apparently a music town. Out to the east is some gorgeous country. The area around Tyler is awesome. If you're looking for hills though, the Hill Country is your place. It's the best of Texas all wrapped up in an awesome package. Perhaps San Marcos? I believe there is a State Uni there and it's between Austin and San Antonio. If you are wanting to be further north, another town worth looking into is Weatherford. It's west of Fort Worth, and basically take a page out of Americana, you'll have Weatherford. I would also suggest you look at Canyon, Texas. It's in the panhandle, and while it isn't hilly, it's not totally flat like most of the panhandle and it's a neat little college town close to Amarillo. Canyon has a college there, I considered going, and tuition out there is lower than the rest of the state it seems. However panhandle = no trees, pretty much. On the opposite side, down by Houston there is a town called Liberty, Texas. I only passed through once, and it seemed to be a smattering of houses in the middles of the piney woods. If you like trees, that'd be a consideration. However, from there, I'd imagine you'd have to go to Houston or Beaumont for education. Round Rock is a cool suburb (if such a thing exists) of Austin, but it's probably rather pricey. Austin is booming and it's the most expensive city overall in Texas. If you want it, you can find it in Texas. If you're wanting to be close to good education the best thing I'd suggest is to look NEAR the large metro areas. For instance, Arlington has the University of Texas at Arlington. Mansfield is nearby, while being out of the city and having a small town feel to it. Easily within driving distance, given that you said that's something you want.
Denton has UNT. Austin has UT. Canyon has WTAMU. Bryan/College Station has A&M. Lubbock has Tech. (I've never been to Lubbock.) UH and Rice in Houston. TCU in Fort Worth. Corpus Christi has a smallish town feel while having some of the amenities of a bigger city and has a branch of A&M there. Dallas has SMU and UT-Dallas and UDallas. The best advice I'll give you (and I swear I'm almost done) is too look within driving distance of those cities. If you like Austin but can't afford to be IN Austin, look near Austin, because it's the closest thing to what you've described.
Texas is awesome and I'm certain you'll love it, but I will warn you (especially here in N. Texas) there seems to be an influx of people from out of state who don't like our way of life. Being you are from the Carolinas, I'm not worried, but come here with an open mind.
I'm done now, I promise. I had no intentions for this to be that long, just kind spiraled out of control.
