Hello gentlemen,

What are your thoughts on the Mazda Miata? I'd like to purchase a used NA or NB (my favorite models), and would greatly appreciate some advice from existing owners regarding maintenance, reliability, things to look for when purchasing, etc.

Thank you!

My thought on the Miata is that you need to be buying it for the right reasons. Are you a  driving purist? It's a hideously impractical car, and in terms of appearance, kinda girly-looking. Are you a track-day enthusiast who wants something small and lightweight with almost telepathic steering, high reliability, and still gets good fuel economy? This may be the car for you. Other choices in the category to consider would be the S2000 or the FR-S/BRZ twins. I've never owned one or looked into buying one, so I can't get too specific, but if you're looking for a cheap track car, it's a solid choice.

I worked in a garage some time ago. I recall a customer who bought a Miata for the worst reason, midlife crisis. Poor guy was 6'4". Was painful just watching him unfold from his car. He later bought a BMW, and was much more comfortable. Just something to bear in mind.

I owned a 2008 NC until last year.  Very fun to drive around the twistys.  Remember, its a sports car so don't complain about the ride, the noise and the lack of space!  Mine was reliable except for one thing: the engine light would sometimes come on for no reason.  I'd have to stop the engine to get rid of it.  Dealer never could solve it after 3 or 4 tries.  Go for it!

A Poem by some one that I knowTake nothing lightlyBy Bjorn FaknamTake nothing lightly. No vain promise give. Hold your honor tightly, In the one life we live.Do not throw trust away, Whether in you or from you. Live up to it today, In everything you do.Look with respect. Follow honor to the letter. Use the courtesy you expect. Nay, treat them better. No matter what gifts you were given, You are never above yourself. By whatever cause you are driven, Put yourself on the back shelf. Those around…See More
