So if another member of the AoM forum were visiting your town where would you recommend they eat for a "manly" and memorable meal?

In the summer here it would be: http://www.kingcrabshack.com/

In Houston ... The Taste of Texas. Best steakhouse anywhere. Get the 32 oz. porterhouse. Medium Rare.  With lemon garlic butter seasoning.  It'll set you back $50, but you'll savor every penny. Good salad bar, too.

That is a great place. My daughters class went there when they were studying Texas history. The owners are really big on Texas history and lots of the stuff an the walls is very interesting. Official documents signed by Stephen F Austins father, Austin, Houston, Santa Anna and lots of other really neat historical artifacts and that is before you have even been seated.

Any salad bar that includes a giant block of cheese is an automatic winner. The food is great. I'm not really a big dessert eater but their Slice of Heaven is aptly named. To top it off they have a good selection of ports to wash everything down with to finish the evening.

Been there once.  The ambiance was cool, enjoyed the treats while waiting and the salad bar was good, but I was rather disappointed in the Porterhouse for two that we split.

Recently discovered SmashBurger.  Best burgers I've ever had.  Beats Fuddruckers.  Beats Five Guys.  Even beats Whataburger.  Juicy burgers.

Try the half-pound "Big Smash", with bacon, double cheese, and a fried egg.  Bacon-Egg-and-Cheeseburger.  Heh.  It is a thing of beauty.

I have heard nothing but good things about SmashBurger.

Its good enough that I'd recommend going tonight.  Heh.

There are a bunch of them around Houston ... one on Eldridge near Memorial, one near I-10 and the Beltway, one on 290 and Fry.  Those are the only three even near me.  They need one in Katy.

There's a place here, in Arlington, just made D, D & D with that Fieri guy.  Any of you Houstonians are ever up this way, you gotta try Chop House Burgers.  The signature burger is 1/3 pound of ground sirloin and chopped smoked brisket.  It's amazing.  Hell, even Earl Campbell said so, on National TV!!!

Going to have to try it.  We've recently been going to the Burger Shack on I-10 by Chimney Rock/Wirt/whatever there at the Home Depot and Specs.   Caught myself moaning last time I was  there it was so good.

That Big Smash burger sounds awesome, love fried egg on a burger.

Get the "create your own Big Smash" -- you gotta add the egg.  Heh.  They have a special seasoning they put on the Smash Fries ... some rosemary oil stuff.  Really good.  My wife also swears by the fried pickles.

Haven't tried that Burger Shack.  Those greasy-spoon burger joints are always great, though.  The more run-down the place, the better the burgers.  Same goes for barbecue.  I think the opposite of Mexican food joints ... but my wife swears I'm wrong about that.

"Dan's Hamburgers" in Austin is really good too.  First place I ever went.  My parents took me there when I was only two-days-old ... legend has it I had the bacon double cheeseburger.

JB

There is a Mexican Place with a Great Patio on Rio Grande in Austin that I cant remember the name of Really good!. Also, I am a fan of Stubbs.

The Salt Lick in Driftwood for barbecue, or McGehee's in Marietta for catfish.

You are absolutely right about the Tex-Mex food and grease. It will all have a bit of grease and I have no problem with that. I went to a little place for the first time recently and after I took a bite of my beef enchilada that little void on my plate left by the enchilada slowly filled up with a pool of orange grease. Lost my appetite.
