Lady Blogger Wants to Know: What Do Men Actually Want for Christmas?

I know AoM has a great set of posts on gifts for men, but there is nothing on any of their lists that my husband would enjoy. (At least nothing I haven't already gotten him.) I like to buy or make meaningful or useful gifts, but he seems unimpressed.

So, here's the question: what general principles could I use to figure out what a man actually wants for Christmas?

I'm especially interested to hear from men who are masculine, but who aren't the outdoorsy "man's man" the AoM list seems perfect for.

Thanks for all the help you've been in the past! Thanks to you, women know how to help their husbands be better dads and how to tell you when they are and are not interested. I really appreciate you helping me understand men better.

Was it "no tax" as in a sale reducing the price by the amount of the sales tax, or did she shirk her obligation to pay use taxes?

If was the if you buy online and there's no brick and mortar store in the state no sales tax.

I don't know what a use tax is.

As far as I know, every state that collects sales tax on in-person, in-state purchases collects use taxes on all online and certain out-of-state purchases, through its personal and corporate income tax returns. Use tax is sales tax on purchases where the state wasn't able to collect the sales tax at the time of purchase.

I have someone prepare my taxes, and nothing came up in regards to online purchases. I don't think we have that yet, or at the time anyway.
Just checked, NJ has no state tax of online purchases with no in-state stores.

http://www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation/su_over.shtml

It's on Line 44 of the NJ individual income tax return. You also have the option of filing a separate tax return just for use taxes within 20 days of bringing your purchase into NJ.

It looks like NJ also allows you to estimate your use taxes based on your income, which may be the option your accountant took. You didn't ask what that extra money was about?

Correction...the state does not collect tax on such purchases, but says we owe it anyway, honor system.
I have no idea what we did that tax season. If we owe anything they have no way of proving anything, that's why nobody pays those taxes.
That will change, the governor is pushing an end to non-collection on online purchases.

Elsewhere on that site, it says NJ has access to the business records of out-of-state businesses. I'm sure people with lower-than-expected (based on income, occupation, and place of residence) use taxes are more likely to get audited.

And I always pay my use taxes.

My life is a dreadfully, boringly compliant one.
I'll live with a little audit danger.
Thanks for the info, I'll mention it to my tax guy next time around.

Quite simply:  ego stroked, belly full, and quiver empty.

If he is the creative type then nice tools in that area are always welcome. I am an avid note taker and for my birthday my wife sprung and got me this. http://www.irislink.com/c2-2193-189/IRISnotes-2--Digital-Pen-family...

It has not left my side since. It really hit in an area that I really enjoyed and just enhanced it.

So uh... How's the search going, OP?
