I'd like to think of myself as a gentleman and I often end up acting more like a male, but at the same time I'm very happy/comfortable being a female.

In your opinion, can a woman consider herself a gentleman? Can she follow the guidelines of what it is to be a gentleman?

What exactly do you think? Yay or nay for the lady-gentlemen, and why exactly?

Edit:

By 'gentleman' I'm referring to the behavior, as in being polite and your mannerisms and such. Not so much what's in your pants, even though gentlemen happens to be a male pronoun.

And typically women who call themselves ladies are usually preppy and girly, I wouldn't say I'm extremely masculine but I'm certainly not girly.

This isn't about whatever gender I identify as, more so the general idea of women behaving as gentlemen.

I'd say no. You can still be a very noble, cultured, polite and civil lady though. "Gentleman," by default, is a descriptor that can only be filled by a man, as "Lady" can only be filled by a woman. You can be a masculine woman, but that still would not qualify for the term "Gentleman," nor could an effeminate man be considered a "Lady."

Gentleman refers to the male sex. You are a female. Despite the increasing thought to the contrary you cannot be what you ain't! If you try to "act" gentlemanly, you'll still be a female acting like a man, and God knows we have too many of those around! What's wrong with being a gentle woman? And why would you not want to be that? And, what exactly to you mean when you say you often end up acting like a male? To me that means you're confused.

To me that means you're confused.

Listen to Books on this one; he's an expert.

There's one thing to be confused and then recognize the Light and move from darkness into That Light. The sadness, anger, bitterness, and loneliness all around, everywhere, is proof enough of societies' confused experts!

The sadness, anger, bitterness, and loneliness

Nice to see you are self aware.

You sad little man. Where do you get that i am angry, bitter or lonely?

Where do you get that i am angry, bitter or lonely?

You.

if that's how you interpret scripture (pick and choose out of context) it's no wonder you don't understand the Bible.

You say you're happy and comfortable being a female. If that's the case, I was wondering what it is about gentlemanliness that appeals to you. Is is the code of honor? You can be an honorable woman, you know.

+1

What exactly do you think? Yay or nay for the lady-gentlemen, and why exactly? I'll accept the consensus that the words themselves are some of very few in the English language that are gendered, and that they're not gendered the way all nouns are gendered in other languages, but because the things signified are gendered. You CAN ACT almost however you want in this regard. I've had more than 2 years on AoM to consider whether "ladylike" is just the female equivalent of "gentlemanly." My conclusion is, Probably not. But on AoM, it doesn't matter much.

In Western culture, it seems clear that "gentlemanly" and "ladylike" are not the same.

Thanks to this site, we have some references for gentlemanly behavior.

Are there similar sites that explore ladylike behavior?

What are the reasons that a women are attending this site, instead of frequenting, or, if necessary, creating, sites for ladylike behavior?
