Hello All,

I would like to extend a jubilant hello from East Tennessee. I love this site and have shared it with many of my friends.

My name is Chuck and I am a middle school science/social studies teacher, as well as a high school baseball coach.

Teaching and coaching are my two passions as well as making an attempt to instil old school values in my students and players. You would be amazed at the number of young men that lack basic etiquette and manners. My kids aggravate me a lot for acting "like an old man." I laugh and say that I am just a 26 y/o guy with the mind and mannerisms of a 40 something southern gentleman.

Anyways hello to all of y'all.

Chuck

Good on you!!  Middle school is the age where values can be really driven home. It just seems like the age where the lessons and talks really come together. I'm getting into teaching and I'm really aiming to teach middle or high school just so I can try and do what you are doing. Keep at it, good sir. I'm sure you are making a difference.

Been awhile since I've been to Tennessee. Great place, though. I always enjoy passing through there when I can.

Welcome to AoM!

Good Morning Chuck. Welcome to AoM

Welcome from a 43 yr old Southern Gentleman from the Carolinas

Welcome from a Mississippi gentleman, now in Texas, who has always be accused of not being myself because I was more Southern than country.  :)  I hope we get to talk soon and often.

Hey Chuck, welcome to AoM. Hope you enjoy it.

Hi Chuck!  I support you in your quest to instill good manners in the young, because it is a valuable lesson that all the schooling, degrees, and college accolades can't buy.  Good manners make all the difference in getting that job, getting what you want in a customer service dispute, or even getting that partner that is sought for a relationship.  That is why I appreciate this site so much an I am very happy you're here.

Chuck, welcome. By way of starting conversation, do you mind if I ask you some questions? I'm really curious about the teacher/coach dichotomy. Young men's minds and bodies are on completely different wavelengths if I remember correctly. How do you teach both?

At work, which I would consider teaching middle school, I have to cater to a younger demographic. I have to work a little outside what I would consider my normal comfort zone. It is much more high energy and engaging with 12-14 y/o kids in a classroom than 14-18 y/o young men on a baseball field.

In a way teaching and coaching are the same thing. You introduce a topic, you practice/reinforce it, and you test/play and see the results. If it works then you move to the next, if not you go back and reteach/instruct that particular concept.

The mind/body dynamic is an interesting statement. With baseball, it is more or less training their bodies through repetition and hoping their minds remember what their bodies are supposed to do.

Mix and match vests

I have two vests, a lighter grey one and a darker grey one.  Is it ok to mix and match these vests with a pair of grey slacks that dont quite match either one?  Additionally, can I mix and match either of these with black slacks?See More
