Being very interested in Asian cultures is what got me interested in the idea.  I don't know anything about it though, and wondered if anyone had ever tried it and had any recommendations?

Bump, I was just thinking about this very topic and wasn't sure where to start.

I have used it occasionally, but not in a long time.  Personally, the aroma is way to strong for me to keep it burning all the way through a whole stick.  I would light it, let it burn for a minute or two and then put it out.  That stuff is potent.

Everyone will assume you're a pothead.

My sister uses burning sage to "cleanse" her house. It makes it hard to breath for me when I'm out there visiting. She lives out on the desert in Southeaster Idaho and apparently there is alot of Bannock/Shoshone influence where she lives, so her beliefs parallel the tribes. I can appreciate her beliefs, but I can hardly breath when she lights it.

Re: Derek, I'm thinking of just trying some of this stuff out, maybe we could start there.

Not sure what you're looking for when you mention your interest is because of Asian culture. A good review blog of incense try Olfactory Rescue Service. Ots a good blog and will show you the great variety and styles available.

What I'm looking for, just something that smells nice (i.e. not unmanly) and gives me a feel of tradition.  Not for religious purposes.

Thanks for the blog recommendation!

There is a Japanese charcoal stick I use called, "Aqua". No bamboo smell and it usually doesn't offend incense haters. Clean burning with an extremely distictive, pleasant scent; like sweet rain.

Are you a pothead?

If you're interested in reading about the Japanese incense tradition, I recommend "The Book of Incense" by Kiyoko Morita. It talks about the "incense ceremony" (really more like an incense game) and about the history and manufacture of incense in Japan. One of the nice things about Japanese incense is that there is no bamboo core. The sticks are nothing but dried incense. The blog I mentioned (Olfactory Rescue Service) can also point you to more blogs about the subject as well as on-line stores.

For a masculine scent, I really like sandalwood--check out ORS reviews of the various sandalwoods and you'll certainly find something you like.

I like burning sandalwood incense.  When my wife and I burn incense in the house it is with the windows open most of the time so that the smell does not get too strong.

on a side note, in china, incense with musk in it is considered a contraceptive or a way to terminate pregnancy. it is something they have been using for quite a long time, but I have not idea if there is any scientific validity to it.
