If a teen asked you about joining the military what would you recommend?

If a teen, possibly family, asked you about joining the (US) military what would you recommend?  Maybe you have had this happen recently?

Can you put your recommendation on a scale of 1 to 10?

1 being lets run to another country, smoke pot, and burn flags.  10 being citizenship should only be granted through service.

How much of your advice would be based on what you have done vs what you have heard?  Do you have someone else that you would take them to talk to?   What would you suggest that they do to prepare for joining the military?  What would you suggest that they do in the military?

We have had a few young men ask specific versions of this here but this is my "big umbrella" version of the military question.

Yes....they are. Another one? Maybe. No time soon. America does not have the stomach for it.

Ask a Marine in 1st MAR DIV who just hit his 8 year mark, and has deployed 4-5 times outside of an instructor billet...how getting your legs blown off in Afcrapistan is any different today because Obama is planning a with-drawl.  I guess the wars are over for most people who forgot we were even there. None of this of course is relevant to the main theme...which is what joining the military can mean if you do it a certain way.

You and I don't need to trade war stories.  My point is, joining today, isn't the same as joining eight years ago.  The chances of a boot, now, seeing combat, are slim to none.  Just the amount of s hit you have to go through in order to give it one last go-round should tell you that.

@Shange:  I actually hypothetically meant ask a service member who is still being sent over there what has changed, I wasn't referencing myself.

Good advice.  I'll ask someone who's still being sent over.

Shane turns to the guy on the computer next to him:

"Hey, what's it like here?"

Guy next to him:

"WTF Staff Sargent? Have you lost what little mind you had?"

I would like to thank you guys for helping me keep my sanity.

I have not forgotten we are there and I am not going to get in a contest with you about who's is bigger. I will say that just playing the law of averages....when less people are there the chances of being sent decline dramatically.

not all MSO's of the Marines are combat, just sayin'

Your right.  But some people get close to the margin, or mission necessity puts them there anyways.  I've seen that and I hate to see it happen to anyone.

Would you all be more hesitant to support a teen's decision to enlist for combat arms than to be a REMF?

Why or why not?

It would make no difference. Today's battlefield is not the battlefield of our grandfather's (or great grandfather's for some of you young guys). There are no front lines. A truck driver is as likely to get into a gunfight as an infantryman through accidental contact. With the U.S. reliance on technology and having one of the most advanced militaries in the world, the only counter is to be mobile, low tech, and sustaining. We have taught the world that if our enemies can last until public support fades then they will probably win and at a relatively low cost. To aid in turning public support and keeping cost down the enemy will continue to target soft targets. This increases the element of danger for everyone no matter what their job may be.
