The air intake covers the battery. I need to remove it. It has two small screws. No biggie.
The screws are covered by some plastic trip that is kept in place with their weird plasticky . . . caps? Screws? Bolts? Whatever they are, they're those round, button-looking things on the plastic trim at the front of the engine.
I was able to force two of them out just to see what would happen. They came out. But now they're somehow busted and they don't "stick" when I put them back in.
So I need to remove that plastic trim thing in order to unscrew the air intake in order to change my battery but I don't want to wreck the other plastic button screw things resulting in my not being to re-attach the plastic trim thing.
Any ideas or suggestions?
Yeah, I have an Outlander Sport. (It's called an RVR up here and an ASX everywhere else in the world.) I had seen the videos and they make it look fairly easy. But there's a glitch.
Looking at video 4, shows that the 2 rivets are expsed. On mine, they aren't There's a piece of plastic molding that run the length of the front of the engine that covers those two rivets. (See the picture I posted above compared to what the front of the engine area looks like in video 4. His doesn't have the plastic molding.) The plastic molding is held in place by those round, black, button-looking fasteners. I can yank them them but that seems to "break" them because, when I slip them back in, they're loose and they wiggle around; they don't hold the molding down anymore.
Do you guys know if there's a way to remove them without breaking them? And/or do you know if they are generic enough parts that I should be able to just buy replacements and tap them back in?
Update: My brother and dad and I have used the same mechanics for all our respective vehicles for years. They've demonstrated on more than one occasion that they are completely trustworthy. Their recommendation? Yank'em out then secure the molding in place with plain ol' zip ties.
Stypid Question # 1. Have you dug into the owner's manual? I ask because I've overlooked the obvious more than once when doing a repair. As an aside, I own a Saturn VUE. There's one or two Youtube videos for changing a headlamp bulb on the car...one of which involves BREAKING a fastener. Owners manual has com plete instructions for changing the bulb without breaking stuff.
The mysterious platic thingies are trim fasteners. They're supposed to be reusable, but it seems to be a 5o% chance you'll break them. Easily found at either the dealer ($$$) or an auto parts store ($).
And last, thank The Almighty you're not driving an older Fiat 128. The amount of stuff you have to unbolt under the hood (smog plumbing, heatshield, etc.) just to get to the spark plugs is ridiculous
