Just another "I'm new here" post.
I found this group a little while back when it was referenced on Bartitsu.org. What a discovery! In the time since, the Art of Manliness blog has become one of my most anticipated feeds and I've spent many enjoyable hours following chains of related posts and off-site research inspired by the posts. Now I figure it's time to take the next step and try and move into the larger community.
I live in Allentown, PA and would love to hear from anyone who might live nearby, perhaps with an eye toward forming a manly IRL extension of the online community in the area. My main hobby is creative writing, primarily in online Star Trek simms (a sort of combination of creative writing and role-playing where members take on one or more characters in a Star Trek setting and attempt to create a collaborative story. If there are any writers or Trekkers out there who think that sounds cool, by all means drop me a line. My ship is a Defiant Class and always looking for a few good beings. My website is unfortunately down at the moment, but I'm working on it.
Other, less aggressively pursued interests, mainly because of time & financial issues, include Native American & Eastern philosopy, the martial arts (American Kenpo and, more recently, Aikido), swords and hand weapons and a growing interest in social media, which is part of what brought me here. I'm 40 years old, a lifelong reader who lately has favored audiobooks (unabridged only) as a way to keep reading around a lack of time and a tendancy to fall asleep if I get too comfortable while reading hardcopy (I work two jobs).
By trade, I'm a security officer, though for the last two years I've been more focused on remote monitoring of cameras and alarms rather than physical security. I worked for a decade in the security department of a major hospital in our area, as well as various contract jobs. I also deliver auto parts part time in the mornings (full time job is night shift) to make ends meet.
