I often carry on my person a 2 to 3 inch blade folding gerber knife cliped to my pocket as a tool for day to day stuff. One day i was asked if i carryed it for self defense. I said nope but looking back it brings up a good questoin would it work and is it legal. Do pocket knives fallow the same rules as guns and can they be consealed. Finally would it ever be useful in that capasity.

Pocket knives are tools.  Very useful tools.  Anyone who has to ask what they're for, obviously doesn't understand that.

When I flew out of state, about a month ago, I made certain to leave behind my nail clippers, but forgot about the pocket knife I *always* carry on my person.  So long as it was short enough, 2 1/4" if memory serves, I was allowed to keep it and even carry it on board the plane, in my pocket.  In both directions.  Wasn't an issue, even with the TSA guards...and these same guards measured the length of my screwdrivers.

Anyone who thinks a simple pocket knife is a "dangerous weapon," is just a fool.  I freely admit that anything can be used in a dangerous manner, but that's not the problem.  The problem is that we have too many fools.

Just as an fyi - TSA is not in the habit of letting pocket knives of any size through. I would consider this a lucky exception - maybe they thought you were active duty or something.

They are explicitly called out on their website as no go through the checkpoints.

maybe they thought you were active duty or something.

I know that...that's why it was noteworthy.  But I did ask, and they said it had to do with the length...that knife is tiny, and fits in the coin pocket of my jeans.

Gotcha - the way it was told I didn't want people to try for themselves. Quick way to lose a good knife.

TSA can be, in my limited experience, rather irregular about things.  I recently got grumped at about a tube of sunblock.  Same tube had been in the same bag, going through the same airports three times previously that month.

That's what happens when airport security is run by mall cops with GEDs.

BTW, the same agents who let me keep both my knife and a set of screwdrivers (I'm a computer tech) seized my half tube of toothpaste.

maybe they thought you were active duty or something.

Thanks!  Being mistaken for a member of our armed forces would, indeed, be an incredible compliment.

But while I do have enough self confidence, and I definitely have the haircut, I lack the physical build.  Even if I had shown up dressed head to toe in MARPAT, I'm too fat to look like an active duty member of anything.

But I'm working on that.  Maybe by next year...  :)

I have surrendered a lot of Swiss Army Knives to the TSA. I have accidentally left them in my back pack though. As far as if it is illegal to carry knives of certain lengths concealed, it depends on the state.
