Hi everyone

Where I work they offer flu vaccinations every year. So far I have never gotten a flu shot, but many people I know get them every year.

I read some articles on the effectiveness of flu vaccinations, but it really is a mixed batch and I was wondering what other people think about getting (or not getting) an annual flu shot.

I've never gotten one.  Strikes me as an insurance policy against a bad cold.  I can self-insure.  I've had the flu a time or two.  You feel awful for a few days, and you get better.  Never felt the need to vaccinate against that.  Overdose on Ny-Quil, feel terrible, and sleep it off.

If it'll kill ya ... then vaccinate.  If your immune system is compromised, or you're old and fragile, or young and fragile, or whatever ... vaccinate.  If not, the risk isn't high enough.

Some things get called "flu" that aren't really.  I know people used to die of flu, and not just the old and very young.  That said, if I were single, I doubt I'd bother with the shot unless it was free.

I consider it may civic duty to my fellow countrymen who can't take the shot.

The side benefit is that if the people got the virus prediction correct, the flu passes over me.

Seriously the more people who are inoculated against the flu the better the whole population is because it may not get passed into pockets of people who can't get the shot.

I got one once and it made me sick anyway.  Since then I've decided i might as well just take my chances without one.  Getting the flu strengthens your immune system.  The proof of the benefits of a flu shot seem sketchy.

Sometimes the people who have to choose the formulation 8 months ahead of when the shot is available make a mistake about which will be the top 3 flu viruses.  When that happens people get the shot and still get the other flu virus.

Last year's choice was that way.  They missed calculated which would be the problem, given this the shot was around 70% effective.  I got the flu, but when my doctor explained this, I felt better about getting the shot.

Strengthens your immune system?

That's what the vaccine does.  It gives you a weakened virus for your immune system to fight and develop a defense against.  That's how you don't get the flu after getting the shot.  Your immune system is just as strong for recovering from the flu as it is from getting the shot.

I have gotten a flu shot every year since I got the flu and my wife had to take care of two babies by herself for a week, with me staying in the basement so I wouldn't make them sick.

Years ago I ended up in the hospital with flu-caused pneumonia, and it was miserable. I've made it a point to get yearly flu shots since.

I forgot to mention I came down with it after becoming a parent; having kids is the equivalent of daily germ warfare.
As a single young guy I would not worry about it too much unless you are exposed to lots of people through work/school etc.

If you don't get the flu vaccine you have a small chance of getting the flu.

If you do get the flu vaccine you can still actually get the flu. In addition to that a small fraction of people get sick from the vaccine. Some think there is a link between autism in children and vaccines such as the flu vaccine.

In my family we don't get the flu shot. We wash our hands thoroughly, stay away from sick people and eat healthy foods to boost the immune system. We avoid medication unless it is necessary and we don't see this as necessary.

Seeing that you are a young healthy male you are probably going to be fine with or without the flu shot.

The autism from vaccine is complete junk that has been repeatedly disproved.

The reason for the small chance of getting the flu if you don't get the shot is the fact that most people get the shot.  With all the anti-vaccine crap in the media, the CDC is starting to see pockets of viruses previously thought delt with as groups stop vaccinating and open breeding pools.
