This afternoon, I happened across one of my favourite passages from Henry David Thoreau:

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.
I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practise resignation, unless it was quite necessary.
I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms, and, if it proved to be mean, why then to get the whole and genuine meanness of it, and publish its meanness to the world; or if it were sublime, to know it by experience, and be able to give a true account of it in my next excursion.

This pretty much sums up the way I would ideally like to lead my life.

How about you guys? Any quotes that stirred your blood, or somehow struck a chord with you?

"Only the dead have seen the end of war." - Plato
It is foolish and wrong to mourn the Men who died. Rather, we should thank God that such Men lived.

~ Gen. George S. Patton

Pray as if everything depended on God, and work as if everything depended on you.
~ St. Ignatius Loyola

We're surrounded. This greatly simplifies our problem of how to get to them and kill them.

Tomorrow is the most important thing in life. Comes into us at midnight very clean. It's perfect when it arrives and it puts itself in our hands. It hopes we've learned something from yesterday.
~ John Wayne.

And no list of quotes is complete without something terribly funny and politically incorrect, so lets have a little something from my favorite British Royal, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich.
" If it has four legs and is not a chair, has wings and is not an aeroplane, or swims and is not a submarine, the Cantonese will eat it. "
" Do you know they're now producing eating dogs for the anorexics?

that's a great passage. To find more similar great passages, check out "nature" and "self reliance" by ralph waldo emerson. A ton of quotable stuff in there.
I like the Diana Gibaldon quote, it is beautiful.
My quotes file has gotten to be... robust is a good word I think. Some of my favorites though:

"I will do nothing lightly. When I walk, I will walk heavily. When I fight, I will fight with conviction. When I speak, I will speak strongly. When I feel, I will feel everything. When I love, I will love with everything."
-Evan Tanner

"The Dark, and the Desert, and Destriers me ken, and the Glaive, and the Joust, and Paper and Pen"
Al Mutannabi

"Now and then we had a hope that if we lived and were good, God would permit us to be pirates"
Mark Twain

"The thing which happens after mediocrity, is the ground." Mark Twight (This is one I say to myself as a reminder rather often - Not just as a climber, but in almost every endeavor).

"I have always lived violently, drunk hugely, eaten too much or not at all, slept around the clock or missed two nights of sleeping, worked too hard and too long in glory, or slobbed for a time in utter laziness. I've lifted, pulled, chopped, climbed, made love with joy and taken my hangovers as a consequence, not as a punishment. I did not want to surrender fierceness for a small gain in yardage." -John Steinbeck

"I aim to misbehave." Capt. Mal Reynolds

"If you want to lose a fight, talk about it first." Quellcrist Falconer
Without question. Partial to Firefly myself...

I'll kill a man in a fair fight. Or if I think he's gonna start a fair fight. Or if he bothers me. Or if there's a woman. Or if I'm gettin' paid. Mostly when I'm gettin' paid. - Jayne

Remember: if anything happens to me, if you don't hear from me within the hour, you take the ship -- and you come and you rescue me. - Mal

Biggles?

Anyone here ever read Biggles, by Cpt. WE Johns? I read the books more than any other books when I was a kid. Biggles taught me more about being a man than anyone else, real or fictional. Had about half of the 95 or so books that were written. Favorites were the WW1 ones, but they were all good.
