Do people think your pretentious when they know about your gentlemanly pursuits?

I know there are a lot of great guys out there, but I wanted to know how many of you guys are "discriminated" against by men and women who think that you may be in a different "world/era" than they are. I mean, lets face it, being a lady or a gentleman is not the mainstream these days. Do people think that your ideas are outdated, pretentious, maybe even out of line?

Thanks Ryan, I think so too :)
first you should ask if I give a flip. Gentlemanly? To those who deserve it, an *hole to others.

My pursuits could not be considered pretentious, maybe a bit odd yes.
well you do throw pennies at orphans whilst laughing upon a horse.... Smoking your pipe and twirling your moustach!
I am entitled to do that, you peasant!
Yes. (Particularly when it comes to sailing or scuba diving. Apparently a great many people fail to understand that poor people such as myself can do those things as well as the wealthy.)

But then, I am almost celebratory about my pretentiousness.
I don't ever really stop to think about what others think about me. I married the only person whose opinion honestly effects me. Everybody else gets due consideration but in the end I'm my own man.
This.

I LOVE wearing pants, ties, shirts, etc... I own two suits. I guess I have a 1950s style haircut. The shirts, pants, ties and old haircuts are, in my opinion, what look good. They're classic (not really attached to a time period except for the hair)

People always ask "Why are you so dressed up all the time?" (Usually said condescendingly. I usually just say it's casual for me, that I'm trying to bring the classics back. Most people don't understand. Now, it's all about jeans and t shirts (frumpy, boring, and childish in my opinion - grown men and women can't be polished)

I just finished high school, too, and when I was in school people thought it was "weird" and "nerdy." clearly they don't know what "nerdy"is...
People are concerned with being "over-dressed" and it needs to be the other way around.
I think that the problem is a lot of people on this site have latched onto outward appearances as defining their manliness. Guess what? Just because you have a handlebar mustache, wear a bow-tie, sport three-piece suits, and smoke a pipe doesn't mean you're man. It doesn't mean you're not a man, but these are merely fashion choices.

Being a man has everything to do with personal character and a sense of responsibility. If the people around you think you're being pretentious, it's probably because you're wearing a top-hat to a sports bar. If that's the case, than they are completely right.

If that's not the case, and they think you're pretentious because you insist on doing the right thing (however you may define that), it's not you that's the problem, but the company you keep.

In the end, take a good look at yourself and figure out if you're defining "manliness" by what you wear, and not what you do. Adjust your friendships accordingly.
A lot of people may think that outward appearances are important, but I think the majority of site members agree with your assesment. Character makes the man, not the things he owns. Absolutely.
Andreas hit the nail on the head. Appearance is nothing compared to character, which is should be the main focus.
I feel part of being a man is not apologizing for your beliefs. I don't mean be arrogant about them, just hold them with integrity. From experience I find people respect men being manly and not a conformist to trends. I don't see masculinity or manliness a relic from a bygone era. For most of us, it is just who we are.
