You are off to a great start!  

Favorite cream is probably Bigelow.

Favorite soap is either Van Der Hagen Deluxe or Ogallala Bay Rum

Favorite Aftershave is probably Masters Bay Rum

The problem is that my favorites change on a weekly basis, so next week they will all be different.

The bay rum scents really interest me. I am sure the tub and tube I just purchased will last me a lot time. But there are a handful of soaps and creams I want to try.

Based on your experiences, what are the differences between creams and soaps? which do you prefer?

I prefer them both. I like soaps some days and cream other days. A lot of people like both and some people prefer just one or the other. 

Creams are soft and you put a "snurdle" (about the size of an almond) in a mug/bowl and whip it up into a lather. Your Proraso is a Cream.

Soaps are hard and you load your brush with the soap and then whip that up into a lather. 

Croaps are soft soaps that are a mixture of both.  Your RazorRock is pretty Croapish. 

I have some RazorRock (2 different ones) and the Proraso Sandalwood (called Proraso Red) and I do like them both alot. The funnest part is experimenting with different kinds of stuff and trying them all out.

Ya I heard great things about Proraso. I figured I would like the sandalwood better than the green menthol tube, so i picked it up. And ya I figured the razorrock i picked up was a mixture of soap and cream. Well, I am counting down the days til my package arrives.

RazoRock is good stuff. As is Proraso, Mitchell's Wool Fat, Tabac, and D.R. Harris. I don't use anything other than water for preshave. Postshave, I use an assortment of splashes such as: Pinaud Clubman, Old Spice, Aqua Velva, Proraso, Floid, and Skin Bracer.

As a beginner straight razor shaving, recently converted from DE, my favorite shaving soap is anything that smells like Sandalwood.  Right now I'm using Taylor of Old Bond Street shaving soap and the soap has an almost "powdery" feel to it, it's great!  For my aftershave I made my own bay rum scent by using essential oils combined with allspice, cinnamon, orange zest, and 90 proof alcohol.  Great scent, very spicy, but not much staying power.

I tried a few different shaving creams and I have found that the Body Shop's Maca Root Shave Cream gives really good results. Like many people are saying, keep experimenting till you find something that works for you!

I tried and bought a ton of soaps, creams and razors over the past few years. Since I have sensitive skin I have found that shave oil and my Hydro 3 have never failed me. I will sometimes use my EJ DE89 with Mitchell's Wool Fat or Valobra Stick, but my skin does not always cooperate.

You made a great choice on the DE89L.  Might want to build up to the Feathers, or you could fillet yourself something nice.  They are all business.  I personally think Proraso sucks.  I can't stand the bottle I have of it.  It feels nice initially and then the soothing qualities evaporate and leave your skin wanting more.  Bay Rum for aftershave works beyond awesome.  It just lasts all day.  I am curious to see about how the RazoRock smells.
