Cross Country Road Trip
I was accepted into Auburn University as a transfer student and am super excited to be leaving California.
Right now I am fulltime college student at a local community college and work part time at a BMW and MBZ shop as an assistent.
California is not the golden state it once was...
This use to be the place of Aerospace and John Wayne
I am going to be packing up my 1993 BMW 325i with my stuff and head down i10 in August.
Tools,guns,clothes and whatever else fits...
I have started gathering together parts for things that need to get done before I leave for school.
For AAA I have their premium top of the line towing which I hope goes unused on this trip
My AZ ccw permit was approved a couple weeks ago so that will be comforting driving near the southern border and places I have not been before.
I have kinda vaguely mapped out the places
Orange County to Phoenix
Phoenix to El Paso
El Paso to Austin
then down to San Antonio and Houston
over to NOLA
then up to Auburn
I am looking for sight seeing suggestions/must sees,food suggestions,lodging suggestions and just general road trip info.

I can't give you any sight seeing suggestions, but Caffe Medici in Austin is pretty great from a "quality coffee" perspective if that's your thing. If not, there's a place called Spider House which has significantly worse coffee, but it's a cool outdoor night hangout. Just my $0.02

If you're carrying guns in the car, you need to check the state/local laws on that. Some states have very strict laws on how, where, etc., you can transport firearms in motor vehicles. Just saying, so the AoM resident Texans can calm down. You're transiting several states, and I'm unfamiliar with their laws, and it would be lousy to mess up what sounds like a nice trip with a firearms charge resulting from a traffic stop.

I am coming from California...
One of the worst states in the union when it comes to gun rights
I know for a fact that the laws in Arizona,NewMexico,Texas,Louisana,Mississippi and Alabama will be better than what I am use to
I know that my CCW permit works in all of the states I will be traveling in
But yes I will take a look at the laws for transporting for the states I will be going through
I have this neat iPhone app for CCW and general gun laws on a state by state basis that I shall use

You might want to re-check and see if you CCW is valid in C.A.. I was stationed out there for 5 years. And to my knowledge you Have to have a special CCW permit for that state. As well as when you travel you have to seperate the rounds from the mags, put the mags in a diffrent compartment, and have the wepon in a locked case out of arms reach. I.E. the trunk of your car.

No the AZ nonresident permit is not valid in CA
A California permit is only valid in California, obtaining a permit from the Orange County Sheriff department would be like asking for a gallon of unicorn tears
ammo can be in a magazine

IMHO, the OP doesn't have a California CCW. And geting a CCW permit is nigh unto impossible in all 58 counties [in the state].

There was an incident several years back, not involving any of the states you've listed, where a fellow driving to an out of state hunting trip got arrested because he didn't have his hunting rifles stowed properly in his pickup. He was legal where he lived, legal where he was going, but illegal where he was stopped.

Yeah ... that's going to be a long day. There's nothing but nothing between Austin and Midland.
Keep an eye on the speedometer during that stretch. Its easier than you'd think to be driving 90-100mph and not know it. And Barney Fife in West Texas is always looking for a Californian to nail with a speeding tax.

Austin: 6th Street for a drink, Stevie Ray Vaughn monument, infamous University of Texas clocktower, Congress Ave. Bridge Bats, Mt. Bonnell park is the highest point in the city and overlooks downtown and surrounding countryside.
New Orleans: French Quarter antique shops are surprisingly interesting, Garden District architecture, St. Charles Ave Streetcar, Jackson Square, French Qtr at night for people watching and drinks. Definitely eat at Clover Grill (epic burgers cooked under hubcaps and huge breakfasts). Otherwise, avoid eating in the French Qtr to avoid tourist pricing. Another tip, if you want to drink, buy a six pack or bottle at a corner store in the Qtr and carry it around instead of buying drinks in the bars. All of the action is on the street and open carry of alcohol is allowed, so save your money. Finally, be aware and be safe. Pickpockets are everywhere and the neighborhoods surrounding the Qtr are ultra ghetto. Stay in the main areas. Hotels are pricey. Last time we chose a B&B instead. Was called House of the Rising Sun and located on Algiers Point, a short ferry ride across the Mighty Mississippi to Canal St.
