Some idiot at Chick-Fil-A today decided to scream at my great aunt saying she dinged his car. I was walking out of Chick-Fil-A, was right in front of the car, and saw Mary open/close her door to shake some ice off. She definitely didn't touch his car. As we tried to pull out, he started blaring his horn and told her to roll the window down via hand motions. Once she rolled it down, he started yelling at her and telling her how much of an ignorant idiot she is for just smacking his car and not saying anything. He gets out, comes over, and says she hit it. She says she didn't know and that there's no damage, and that she's really sorry. He says "I do not like your attitude and am reporting this." He proceeds to look at his car, WIPE THE ICE OFF THE SIDE, and show her a little paint chip near where a door would have hit. Stop, what? She chipped the paint through the ice on his car? No. She gives him the insurance information to get him to shut up, while he proceeds to tell her how stupid and terrible she is all while she apologizes politely. He gets back in his car, never shutting his mouth, and we leave.

Disrespectful, greedy, ignorant shits like this guy make me more angry than anything on the planet. But not knowing anything about car insurance (I'm 16 and not driving yet), I was wondering what could happen with this? How do insurance claims like that work, and what are the chances of him just getting away with being a con like this? If anyone could give any information/tips, it'd be appreciated.

She should have taken pictures of his car. Now that he has the insurance information he can make an insurance claim for more damage than was actually done, even if there was not any damage done.

Call her insurance company to contest the claim.

Probably shouldn't have given him insurance information to begin with.

For now, you should suggest that she call her insurance company, tell them what happened, and contest any claim.

For the future, I'd suggest calling the cops next time something like this happens.  Now, the cop's job isn't to resolve this sort of dispute, but they are supposed to keep the peace, and it sounds like this asshole was threatening and intimidating (and using those threats and intimidation to run a scam).  If someone wants to do something like this, let them do it with a cop present (or at least the promise of cop on the way).  Another option would be to park and go back inside, or even to drive off.  Don't give in to the angry scam artist, rather, get help and/or get away.

I think she thought (as well as I did) that she was supposed to give that information no matter what. But thanks for your advice and I'll remember this stuff next time. She was already planning on calling, so we'll see what happens. Thanks guys.

You've received good advice thus far.  Truth is that without a police report to support his claim, you should have NO problem contesting it if he decides to file.

If your aunt was being friendly while he was yelling at the top of his lungs throwing curses at your aunt, you're more than entitled to shutting him up with your fist or just giving him the finger and driving him away

Fact is, you are not allowed to just punch someone because they are being loud and ignorant.

All good advice, sans the above.

This event is exactly why that camera feature on your cell phone is a good thing.

BTW,  technically this guy isn't a con artist.  He's the typical vehicle insurance scammer.  What's out of the norm is that he pulled this one off solo.  Be prepared for a whole raft of "witnesses" coming out of the woodwork.

Did your aunt get his insurance information?  Odds are he doesn't have car insurance.

She didn't. We were in a rush to just get home and left asap.
