Your haircut sounds very nice. I'm sure it looks very smart.
In what direction does your hair go, naturally? Does it take on the basic side parted style on its own, or are you fighting to get it in place?
When I wore my hair in that style, it actually went into the general shape, on its own. So, I didn't need a tremendous amount of help. In fact, I'd just blow dry it, "squish" it down with a baseball cap until it cooled (yes, I'm serious) and then it'd basically behave. A little gel could smooth it, afterwards, if necessary.
The trick was getting it to go in the right direction, in the first place...not gluing it into position, afterwards.
Chuck's post has some good advice, especially about the ballcap.
I too have a side-part. I use Layrite Pomade from Hawlywood's Barbershop in LA (I'm in Chicago but my barber sells it). It's really good stuff- the extra-hold provides a lot of hold, especially if it's mixed with a little bit of water. And it's water-soluble so it'll wash out with no problem when you shower. I suggest you look into it.
I grabbed some of that pomade, and a tube of groom and clean. The pomade has the same hold as Murray's but its much easier to wash out. I'll keep that stuff for when i have to be a little more active, because the groom and clean seems to work best for a normal day. Thank you for the recommendation!
I too just recently started getting a slicked side part! Welcome to the club! I swear by two products: Brylcreem and Groom and Clean...these are the only two I will use. I have extremely thick hair, but a quarter size amount of brylcreem gives great hold all day and excellent shine so that's my recommendation. If you want something that is water based and washes out of your hair easily Groom and Clean is the way to go.
There is plenty of great information on both products in the forum and on the website. It's how I learned about them myself.
Brylcreem? I have a tube of that myself but I never felt it had any hold...
I got some groom and clean and that gel really does leave your hair feeling clean. I use that for everyday use and use the pomade for concerts and such.
