I love the outdoors (camping, fishing, hunting, etc.) and want to experience backpacking. I have a bag packed, and I'm planning a trip within the next few weeks. Any tips, stories, and experiences?

Permalink Reply by Ian Wilson on July 22, 2012 at 9:19pm best advice i have heard and can give is KEEP YOUR FEET HAPPY. you can put up with alot, but if you feet are not happy, your trip will be ruined and cut short.
my tricks for happy feet: no cotton. the shoes you hike are only to be worn while hiking, where something different when you reach your camp site (crocs are good cause they are lightweight and easy). when you stop and rest during the hike, even if just for 5 minutes, TAKE OFF YOUR BOOTS. let your feet cool and dry off. some hikers recommend dipping them in a cold stream to shrink the blood vessels. pack extra socks, change them often. don't hike in brand new boots. break those puppies in see if they will develop hotspots (that lead to blisters). if you get a hotspot, don't wait until it become a blister. use that moleskin stuff to mitigate it.
where you plan on going?
Permalink Reply by Logan on July 23, 2012 at 7:06am I'll be headed up to High Point State Park in northern New Jersey to hike that portion of the Appalachian Trail. I think there's about 17 miles of it in Jersey and then it crosses into New York. I might set my goal at making it to NY, but I'm not sure.

Permalink Reply by Neill on July 23, 2012 at 10:40pm great points! another i can suggest is distribute your weight in your pack evenly.
Water bladders are a great way to position water storage without having a bottle jabbing you in the back,
I saw a few keen backpackers with a smaller bag on the front with their scroggin in it. (snacks)
No so much evenly distributed than keep the heavy crap as close to your body as possible so it pulls down on your LBE, not backwards and keeps your COM more like it is when you aren't carrying a pack.

Glad you clarified what "scroggin" means...
