The other day I was getting a shave and a haircut at my local barber shop when I got some saddening news.  The barber I've been going to is retiring and moving down to Fl.  He's certainly earned it.  He's owned the same manly barber shop for 45 years and has always been good to his customers.

The silver lining is that the shop itself isn't closing.  A young man has already bought the shop from him and for the next few weeks until he moves, Karl (the barber who is retiring) will be working as the new guy's employee.

I'm 25 and this is the 2nd barber I've gone through.  The first one passed away and then I (along with all the other men in my family) moved on to karl.

Cheers to Karl!

Why sad? Life is all about change, and the changes you put here are all normal, good changes. Your barber had a good run, and is retiring to enjoy the rest of his life. Sounds like he found a good successor and did not have to shut down the place, very good all around.

To me sad would be closing the shop and sale of its contents.

Update:  I got my first haircut with the new guy (Tom).  There's a few trade offs but all in all an equal experience.

Improvements: Since Tom is much closer to my age our rapport is much more natural.  Good conversation is a cornerstone of the men's barbershop experience.  Also the haircut is still good, which as Jess Levens said is pretty much the most important aspect of it.

Not so great:  No straight razor shaves.  He heard some horror stories about people filing lawsuits after they move on purpose and get cut so he doesn't do it.  When I mentioned my wedding was coming up he said he would consider it for that.  So I guess he can be convinced.

All in all:  Karl left the shop in capable hands.  I'm sure he can rest easier in his retirement knowing that Tom is keeping the barbershop going strong.

Anyone who deliberately screws up a barber's straight-shave just to sue him, should be bitch-slapped in public during the town lunch-hour, in the middle of the main street.

A skill like that deserves respect. And should not be exploited. Especially to get a few measly dollars. And especially not when the barber can kill you if you really piss him off.

I know what you mean.  When he told me that my first thought was, "What kind of moron risks cutting their throat for any amount of money?"

They ain't called "cutthroat" razors for nothing. You CAN kill someone with one of those if you want to. And it's not hard to do it. One misjudged movement and some sue-happy sucker is likely to be dying of hardcore blood-loss if he times his money-making move at the wrong moment. Plus, cutting yourself with a straight-razor hurts like a BITCH. I've only done it once. For the first, last and ONLY time in my life.

I still straight-shave, but that one experience taught me the importance of paying attention. Never cut myself since. And it was only like 1/4-inch nick. And it hurt like a mother. A full-length razor cut would cane like nothing you could ever imagine.

WHY someone would be stupid enough to voluntarily do that for any kind of money is beyond imagination. Especially when you can actually kill yourself doing it.

Glad to here it John. I have been going to the same Barber Shop since my first haircut and that has been through three owners. 62 years. The current owners are two brothers in their 30 - 40 years old range. They struggled at first finding a third barber but he is in his late 20's. They could charge more if the called their shop a Salon but they only charge $14.00 for a regular cut and $16.00 for a flat top. I think the first hair cut I can remember was about 50 cents. Man I am getting old.

KUDOS to Karl, for having the barbershop
KUDOS to you, John, for sharing this with us. I'm sure you told Karl, how much you appreciated him!

I second the motion that the assholes who purposely get themselves cut, to file a lawsuit, need to be bitch-slapped in public.........but on their balls.......

Or do you not invest at all? Do you prefer to have it still safety in the bank? Let me know, for…See More
